Day 7
Today was a day that we will remember in eternity. The routine
was similar to other days, but the results of our labors were eternally
visible. After a cold cereal, bagel, and toast breakfast we met for
a mission meeting. Doug Lowery challenged our group this morning
with a message about surrender. The girls took some time at the Laundromat
across the street to restock their wardrobes while the boys
got in a little b-ball time.
At one o'clock
we divided into two groups. One group stayed at the church to finish
some manual labor tasks while the second group went with Pastor Martinez
to a street corner to hold Spanish street meetings. Over one
thousand people received a gospel message from Pastor Martinez and our
group today as we handed out tracks on the street corners and sang for the
people who passed by. The manual labor group
divided up to finish the jobs that we began. Some did some more work
preparing the ceiling tiles for garbage pickup. The majority of the
group got down on their hands and knees and scrubbed the gym floor. The
last part of the group painted some trim around the outside of the
building.
This evening
was the third night of the war. By today, no matter the age, everyone feels tired, but we know that this is what we are here for and we need
to keep working for eternity. The crowd was small at the beginning,
probably because of the weather. The sky looked like rain. The
plains taking off from LaGuardia that fly over the park can be heard, but
not seen. The Lord held off the rain and gave us a great
night. Tonight the war engaged Coke vs. Pepsi in a battle of
"Big ball
steal the bacon" and "Don't crack the pack." Both
games demand physical contact, but the Lord protected the biggest group
that we have seen yet. Pastor Sawyer preached a gospel message and
about a dozen teens responded to the invitation! Again some of our
own teens were able to lead someone to Christ. Those who were able
to overflowed with joy. Our group prepared hot dogs and brats for the war
participants, staff, and the members of Faith Baptist who came out for the
activity. That is a lot do do in the middle of a field in the
park. The VBS had their last night tonight. They too had
a good attendance for the puppet show and gospel message. At least
one child prayed to receive Christ. Over the three days the VBS was
able to reach one hundred eleven different children with the gospel.
The puppets, balloons, and face paints are now packed up, but one night
still remains for the war. Pastor Sawyer asked us to change our plan
and do one on Thursday night too. After the war we stopped for some
Italian ice in one of forty unbelievable flavors.
