Day 3
Vacation is an awful lot like work.
We got up early this morning and left the church at seven o'clock under
the direction of evangelist Doug Lowery. After a half mile
walk we boarded the elevated train and rode to Battery Park on the
southern tip of Manhattan. At eight thirty the Circle Line ferry
took us across to Liberty Island where the Statue of Liberty has been
welcoming visitors into New York Harbor since the late eighteen hundreds.
After
waiting for our group leader (Pastor Dave and a few others missed the first ferry), we
locked our bags in finger print recognition lockers and headed into the
Statue of Liberty museum. The passes that PD purchased ahead of time
granted us coveted access to the museum and observation deck on the top
the the SoL pedestal. The long lines kept us on Liberty Island until
lunch, but we couldn't have asked for a better weather. The bright
sunshiny day gave us a clear view all the way back to midtown Manhattan
and made the gold flame on the top of the SoL shine like it was actually
burning.
After
a lunch near Battery Park we headed uptown to the former World Trade
Center site. An iconic
cross, an abnormal gap in the skyline, and gigantic hole recall to mind the
events of 9/11. Our group took the chance to sign banners that
offered US empathy to the city of London in the wake of their recent
terrorist attacks there. The banners were hung on the fence guarding
Ground Zero. The banners called NY and London sister cities in tragedy.
We
continued by subway to Canal Street. A brief thunderstorm made us
wait in the subway tunnel to avoid the rain, wind, and flying news paper
dispensers. A couple hours of souvenir shopping and dinner in Chinatown
packed the afternoon and the group reorganized and headed for the Empire
State Building. Who would have thought that real Rolex
watches and Oakley sunglasses were so inexpensive? (We know they aren't
really authentic.)
Another
jaunt on the subway put us right onto 34th St. and the group miraculously
arrived at the base of the Empire State Building just after seven
o'clock. Our group struggled successfully to stay together through
the long, multi layered lines that engulf the first two floors of the ESB.
It's a good thing that we heard a message on patience last night.
Finally, we reached the observation deck just as the sun was
setting. The view was breathtaking. A look back leaves our
minds reeling about the history and wonder that we saw today.
The long subway ride home put us back at
the church just before eleven o'clock. Tomorrow it's up and at 'em
early to get ready for church. Pray that we will be able to be an
encouragement to First Baptist tomorrow as we minister here.
