Our last day in New York

Our last day in New York City was primarily a sightseeing day. We began by getting up early (7 a.m.) and beginning the process of cleaning the church. By 8:45 a.m. we had eaten breakfast and prepared for a day of riding the New York subway system and visiting some sights we didn't get a chance to see on Saturday.

Our first stop was to visit Engine 7, Ladder 1, a firehouse a few blocks from the World Trade Center site. This firehouse was featured in a CBS documentary about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A documentary crew doing a film about this firehouse shot the only footage in the trade centers after the attacks. The firefighters were extremely friendly and allowed all 55 of us into their firehouse for a few moments. What an experience.

After that, it was off to Canal Street once again for a little more souvenir shopping. Not to ruin any surprises, but I think some of you can expect some New York-themed gifts when you pick up your teens. I won't say what they are, but here's a clue -- You Love New York. Following Canal Street we took a trip to Central Park. It's amazing that a park of this size sits right in the middle of the biggest city in the United States.

Following Central Park, we returned to Faith Baptist Church and began packing up, cleaning up and getting ready to leave. But before that could happen, we prepared for one more installment of The War and Vacation Bible School.

We left FBC at 1 a.m. Friday morning following our final missions meeting. At the meeting we exchanged testimonies about how God spoke to us during this week of service at Faith Baptist Church. It was a great end to a great week.

Our first stop on the way home was Times Square. We spent about 10 minutes getting a look at this familiar section of Manhattan. The lights were so bright that it made it look like daylight, even at 2 a.m. The streets were crowded with people and the visit made it clear to us why New York is the city that never sleeps.

We were heading out of the city by 2:10 a.m., and we returned to Green Bay by 10 p.m. Friday -- a grueling 22 hours on the road, extended by a 92-mile stretch around Chicago that took us nearly 5 hours to traverse. We were weary but blessed upon our return and are excited about the prospect of returning to New York someday to again serve Faith Baptist Church, Corona.
