Just Two More Days!
It's hard to believe we're almost done with
our work here. We looked this morning at the
schedules in our missions
manuals and we're down to the last of four pages! At the close of the day,
we'll have just one day left in New York. The time has been full and
profitable -- at least for us, and hopefully for the teens and children in
Queens and the thousands of people to whom we've given tracts.
This was another sunny day. We got an extra
hour of much-needed sleep before starting on our regular morning schedule.
This morning Pastor Vince Sawyer brought the message in our missions
meeting. He spoke from Romans 12:1-2 about complete surrender and keeping
our lives clean and ready to be used by God. Last night, Pastor Dave spoke
on the same passage, emphasizing the need to separate ourselves from
worldly influences that can shape our thoughts and actions.
This was our last afternoon for working on
the streets to pass out tracts and talk to people about the Lord. Once
again, one group went with Dave Tinsley. He did his artwork and preached
on a street corner right here in Queens. After his message, several people
had questions and came to take the tracts he and the group members had
ready. One man dropped to his knees crying, saying he was sorry for his
sin and he wanted to be saved. Kayla Smith and Ashley Bender spoke to him
and he told them he'd been drinking for three weeks straight and had
recently lost his wife. He was a man in despair but he heard in the
message the answer to his problems. Right there on the sidewalk, he prayed
and asked the Lord to save him. He asked for a visit from one of the Faith
Baptist pastors and I know they'll follow through.
The other two groups went with Pastor
Lowrey to the intersection of Main and Roosevelt streets, a teeming area a
short distance south of the church. (I should mention that we took the
train again and the team members are handling the subway like old pros by
now!) On the street, we broke into smaller groups and distributed tracts
to everyone who would take one. Several team members had a chance to talk,
at least briefly, with some of the people they encountered. Tara Lealiou
had a conversation with a woman who believes Heaven is already full and
there's no hope for anyone else. But she also had a conversation with an
8- or 9-year-old boy who told her that Jesus had already saved him. By the
end of a few hours, we had saturated much of the area with tracts. (A few
people wouldn't take the ones we offered at the end, saying they already
had two or three.) There was a brief moment of excitement when a gang
fight broke out on one corner of the main intersection. The guys -- some
with hammers -- were squalling on the sidewalk and in the street. We were
amazed how quickly the police arrived. Some of the guys ran down into the
subway station but the police quickly stopped several who had been
fighting and hauled them away in a van. There are plenty of other stories
we could tell about our interactions with different people, but you'll
have to talk to team members at home to get all the details.
This evening after a quick dinner, we broke
into teams again for VBS and The War. Once again we had about 35 kids at
VBS. They're having so much fun with our teenagers. The puppet show is
particularly popular. The game team and craft leaders have also done a
good job coming up with activities that the kids will enjoy and remember.
The children are learning the songs and listening quietly (at least most
of the time!) during the stories and lessons.
Pastor Dave spoke at The War today. He
gave a message about the rope of sin and how it will pull us all to hell
unless we heed Jesus Christ's call and let go of our sin and turn to Him.
About 50 teens attended The War, and the re
were about 15 who raised their hands saying they wanted to know for sure
whether Heaven would be their eternal home. Many who came by said the
would come tomorrow, so continue to pray that God will bring us many teens
for Thursday's final War at Flushing Meadows Park.
