Between the Raindrops

We awoke to gray skies this morning. We knew yesterday that the weather report didn't look good for tonight and we began praying last night that God would hold off the rain so The War wouldn't be jeopardized.

Our weekdays here are settling into a nice pattern: Get up, get ready, have breakfast, clean our rooms and move into the morning missions meeting. We've had these meetings twice every day, once in the morning and once at night. Yes, they serve as a good way to review the schedule and go over announcements with the entire group. But more importantly, they've been chances for us to get into God's Word together and be sure that in addition to serving the people here and working to win hearts to the Lord, we're also examining our own hearts and looking for the lessons God has for us. So far, Pastor Dave, Tim Effert and Steve Bruss have brought messages focused on surrender. We've also heard from Evangelist Doug Lowery, who shared his testimony and talked about Jesus' example of how to witness, based on his encounter with the woman at the well. This morning, Pastor Sawyer of Faith Baptist Church brought us a message on personal evangelism.

It rained off and on through the morning ... but we weren't deterred. Our schedule called for lunch out today and we followed through. Pastor Lowrey took us to a favorite restaurant of his: Nueva Villa China. There, you can read the menu in English or Spanish and order either Chinese or Cuban food! Pastor Lowrey encouraged the team members to branch out (many of them had McDonalds or Subway the day we ate out in Manhattan!!). Elizabeth Hangen took him seriously -- she ordered a dish in which the main meat was octopus. Others stuck to more traditional favorites such as sweet and sour pork or sesame chicken. We walked to and from the restaurant in the rain.

While the wet didn't stop our lunch plans, we knew it would put a damper on our afternoon canvassing and witnessing. The more it rained, the worse our chances of finding people in parks and on corners where we had been working on days before. So we moved our operations to the subway stations, which are sheltered from the weather. We passed out hundreds of tracts to people moving through the stations and waiting for trains. As on Monday, one group from our team went out with Mr. Dave Tinsley, who's been working for years as a street preacher in New York. Yesterday, he used artwork to help share the Gospel. Today -- again, because of the rain -- he used a simple magic trick with three ropes to get people's attention while they waited in the subway stations. In between the roars of passing trains, he quickly and simply presented the Gospel to the captive audience of waiting people. His boldness and care for the people were a lesson and inspiration to us.

We're so thankful for answered prayer! By early evening it was still gray but the rain had stopped. We had a quick dinner, then made our preparations for VBS and The War. The guys found and repaired a leak in the big ball, which they use for War games. The VBS team had time for a quick meeting and prayer before the children arrived.

We had about 35 kids again in VBS. The girls and guys are doing a great job teaching them, leading songs, doing the puppet shows, running the games and handling all the little details of the program. The little ones are laughing and learning for a solid two hours. Good news came from that meeting as well -- one of the children in the fifth and sixth grade group was saved.

At the War, there was a smaller group tonight because of the rain. Though there were no professions, many of the teens promised to come back to tomorrow's meeting. Keep praying for this important ministry as we reach out to the children of Queens with God's message of salvation.
