The Work We Prepared for Begins
If
you're going to have a Vacation Bible School (or a War), you need vacation Bible
students (and warriors!). On Monday, we spent the afternoon rounding them up.
Our team divided into three groups today
and circulated in the neighborhoods around the church, inviting children
to attend our VBS and teens to attend The War at Flushing Meadows Park,
which sits in the shadows of the New York Mets' Shea Stadium in Flushing,
N.Y. A third team of students
accompanied some of the
NYSET guys into the
city to participate in street preaching and evangelism. Yesterday, we
promised an introduction to the NYSET guys, so here it is: These are four
college men (a fifth is joining them soon) who will spend the summer
working with Evangelist Doug Lowery here in New York City. They will work
with multiple churches and spend their days preaching, handing out tracts
and otherwise working to win people to the Lord. Two of the guys -- Denny,
from Ohio, and Zeke, originally from Liberia and now from Georgia -- are
Bob Jones University students. The other two -- David, from Maine, and
Daniel, from Mukwonago, Wis. -- are students at Ambassador Baptist Bible
College. They've only been in New York about nine days longer than us, but
they've learned a lot in that time. They're helping us find our way
around, assisting in our work and generally befriending our group. Please
put them on your prayer list for the rest of the summer.
We continue to be amazed at the diversity
of people who live in this city, and especially in the area of Faith
Baptist Church. Walking the street, you're more likely to hear people
speaking Spanish than English. And you'll see people from Asian countries,
Spanish countries, Middle Eastern countries. And very few of them are
native to America. It has been a wonderful experience for all of us.
Many people we met in the park and on the
streets of Queens were very excited about our two events this week. It's
interesting to talk to the New Yorkers, who are eager to visit with people
who
just stop them on the street. And the kids are excited about events like
The War -- I'll describe that better tomorrow -- because most of them were
planning to be at the park anyway. That's how it is here -- the kids hang
out in parks to pass the time and any diversion is a welcome one. That's
a great thing when the goal is to spread the gospel.
After canvassing, some of the teens took
advantage of free time to run across the street to the laundry to clean
their clothes. After that, it was time for a dinner of barbequed pork,
beans and salad. Nancy Metko is doing a bang-up job in the kitchen. Thanks
to all of you who've donated food to the team this year. It is much
appreciated.
After dinner, a group went to Flushing
Meadows for The War, and setup began in earnest for VBS.
VBS started out with about 35 or 40 children.
We pray for even more tomorrow. Please keep this endeavor in your
prayers as we seek to minister to the children of Corona, N.Y.
About
80 kids showed up for The War -- a great turnout. Better news: About 20 of
them professed faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior. The team is hoping
for an even bigger turnout tomorrow for the time of games, fun and a
gospel message.
