Sunday in Queens
Happy Father's Day to all our dads a
thousand miles away (or so)! We spent our Sunday here at Faith Baptist
Church, where we served and worshipped alongside the church family.
The members here come from about 30
different countries. And in the Spanish ministry, another 19 countries are
represented. What a pleasure to meet them and enjoy a church service with
them. Our entire group and several small groups sang in both the
English-language service and the Spanish-language service. Hannah Sutrick
played a piano special as well. One church member here told Miss Sheryl
that she could have listened to us sing all morning.
The people of Faith Baptist typically have
lunch together on Sundays then go straight into an afternoon service. We
joined them in that routine. After lunch, most of us went to the afternoon
service, where we did more special music, listened to testimonies about
people's fathers and watched a Christian film about a father and daughter
and their relationship after their wife/mother died.
The
Vacation Bible School team got right to work this afternoon with an
opening session. The rest of their sessions will be done in the evenings,
but Pastor Sawyer thought we sh ould
get VBS going right away so we could do a full five-day program. About 20
kids were at this first meeting (we're expecting lots more in the evening
programs). By the end of the 1 1/2 hour session, several of the kids were
hugging our girls goodbye. With open hearts and kindness, it doesn't take
long to reach out to little kids!
In the afternoon, many of us napped while
others explored the neighborhood grocery store. About 20 people handed out the
rest of the VBS and The War pamphlets in the neighborhood. On the
half-mile walk back from that work, two girls bought a 27-pound watermelon
and lugged it back to the church. They really, really had a taste for
watermelon! Some of the guys went to a park and the old folks challenged
the young ones to a game of football. I won't say who won because I don't
want the teens to be embarrassed about being beaten by guys twice their
age. The girls were a little sorry to
be left back, so some of them dressed up in Alec Smith's and Luke
Boucher's shorts (how many pairs did they bring?!), stuffed towels across
their shoulders and smeared mascara under their eyes. They didn't actually
play football, but we got some great photos.
We ended our day with a missions meeting to
focus our minds and hearts for the work tomorrow. In addition to VBS and
The War, we'll be doing afternoon work with the four college men involved
in NYSET -- New York Summer Evangelism Team, organized by Doug Lowery.
We'll tell you more tomorrow about Zeke, David, Daniel and Denny --
they've been big helps and great examples for our team.
Talk to you tomorrow! (We love you Dad(s)!)
